..Stephen Caplan’s collection of oboe sounds, sights, and reminiscences.

In 1987 I moved to Las Vegas hoping to make a living as a professional oboe player--now that’s a gamble! What other oboist has given a tuning note to a slot machine? or has had the New York Times remark that he “engages in intricate call-and-response with a chorus of chirping frogs” !

It’s true that you can become rich in Las Vegas--not in dollars, but rich in experiences. I guess I’m suited to this job because I’ve enjoyed playing “Misty” with  Johnny Mathis just as much as playing Bach’s Double Concerto with Hilary Hahn.

I hope you’ll find these pages informative, humorous and, like Las Vegas, a generally pleasant diversion.
